Kanchajunga comprises of seven main summits although it literally means ‘Five Great Treasuries of the Snow’. It is world’s third highest peak that has height of 8,585m from sea level. It is said that this mountain is a residence of god who gives affluence and kindness to the residents of this area.

Kanchanjunga is situated in Eastern part of Nepal. It gives you an opportunity to get acquainted with remote part of the country. The flora and fauna, local culture of Rai and Limbu people and cool environment of the area make the trip worthy.

Trekking to Kanchanjunga begins from Suketar in Taplejung. To arrive in Taplegunj, first we fly to Biratnagar from Kathmandu and get connecting flight for Taplegunj from Biratnagar. It is s a long trek where you reach at the altitude of 5,140m.

Detail Itinerary

  • Day 01:Arrival in Kathmandu As you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), the representatives of Nepal Trek Adventure and Expedition welcomes you and route to the hotel which is already booked for you. In the evening, we organize welcome dinner in the hotel with our team.
  • Day 02:Preparation for trekking There will be pre-trip discussion with your mountain climbing Sherpa guides for well preparation of the trek.
  • Day 03:Fly Biratnagar We take a flight to Biratnagar form Kathmandu. It is around 40-45 minutes flight. On reaching Biratnagar, you make preparations for new experience.
  • Day 04:Fly Suketar and trek to Lali Kharka Suketar is our next destination from Biratnagar. It is 30 minutes flight. From Suketar we begin our trail towards Lali Kharka where we put off for a night.
  • Day 05:Lali Kharka to Keswa Pokora village is our next immediate destination from Lali Kharka. It is an interesting walk on foot where we pass through suspension bridge above Phawa Khola (River). Our trail goes further through dense forest and villages. Finally, after walking for 5-6 hours we reach Keswa where we will spend our night.
  • Day 06:Keswa to Mamankhe We begin our trip after breakfast. Trip to nandeva Khola is a bit hard. We cross the river and trek along mountain passes and forests to be at Loppoding. Our walk further continues till we reach Ponpe Dhara via Anpan village. After crossing Khangwa Khola and following descend path we reach Mamankhe where we will spend our night.
  • Day 07:Mamankhe to Yamphudin Mamankhe to Yamphudin is an easy trail, our first destination of today. We walk by the side of Kabeli Khola. If interested, we can take rest and bath in this river. Yamphudin is the most remote area of eastern part of Nepal where there are small settlements.
  • Day 08:Yamphudin to Lamite Jungle Camp It is an uphill climb followed by downhill before crossing Omje Khola. We will capture mesmerizing views of valley away from Yamphudin to the south and of the Omje Khola Valley and Deurali Danda to the north. A steep decline will finally bring you at Lamite Jungle Camp where we will stay overnight.
  • Day 09:Lamite Jungle Camp to Torontan We walk towards Deurali Dada for around three hours. From the top of this point Mt. Jannu is clearly and closely visible. We further follow jungle course to reach at Simbu Khola. Crossing the bridge over Simbu Khola will join us at Torontan where we will spend our night.
  • Day 10:Torontan to Tseram Today we will follow a course through pine and rhododendron forests. If weather is clear then we will be lucky to get chance to see Yalung glacier clearly. We spend our night at Tseram.
  • Day 11:Tseram to Ramche Tseram to Ramche is a short trail. The vista here is so beautiful at Yalung glacier. Freezing lake, strams, and views of Kokthan, Rathong and kabru are the major attractions of Ramche.
  • Day 12:Ramche – Exploration Today we explore Ramche. Here, for the first time we come close to Kanchangunja. Next to the valley around its extensive curve, we come across the vast southern wall of Mt. Kanchenjunga. The ridge forms a cirque which is over 15 kms long and not less than 7500 m high. Along this ridge lie the three main peaks of Mt Kanchenjunga at 8420m, 8586m, and 8474m. The sight is truly breathtaking. Proceeding further towards Oktang [4630m], we descend onto the glacier and cross it to a point below Talu from where we can see the panoramic view of the mountains in the area. Particularly inspiring is the eastern part of Kumbhakarna Glacier, flowing from the east face of Jannu (Kumbhakarna being the local name for Jannu). We then return to Ramche.
  • Day 13:Ramche to Mirgin La Today, we trek down the valley passing through small village of Lapsang. Then we turn towards Mirgin La, a pass we have to cross to reach north side of Kanchangunja. We will spend night at Mirgin La.
  • Day 14:Mirgin La to Gunsa It is a downhill walk today. We head towards Lamba Sumba Khark from where we get superb view of Mt. Jannu, its south face. Now the trail is downhill till Gunsa. It is a Tibetan village with many gompa and prayer flags.
  • Day 15:Gunsa to Khambachen From Gunsa, we head ahead towards Rampak Kharka passing through pine and rhododendron forests and many mani walls and chortens. We lunch at Rampak Kharka. It is steep climb now before descending to the village of Khambachen. The views of Mt. Jannu or Mt. Kumbhakarna from here are outstanding. Overnight at Khambachen.
  • Day 16:Khambachen to Lhonak From Khamabachen, we trek up to Lhonak through Ramtang village is not too challenging and regardless of the increase in height, we are able to walk on with no trouble, enjoying the magnificent views of the valley and mountain peaks. At Ramtang, we see the incredible fluted summit of Wedge Peak first becomes visible. During the afternoon Nepal Peak, the Twins, Mera and the White Wave all come into view. Then you arrive at Lhonak, situated high above the Kanchenjunga Glacier opposite Wedge Peak.
  • Day 17:Trek to Pang Pema A relaxed 3 hours walk from Lhonak takes us up to Pang Pema. The path follows the moraine before reaching Pang Pema, the North Face Base Camp, which is in a sheltered spot, directly opposite the towering north face of Kanchenjunga. This is one of the most inspiring places in the world and is a high point to this unique trek.
  • Day 18:Pang Pema rest day In Pang Pema we take a rest day, but for the more enthusiastic ones, there are quite a few amusement lined up for the day. One is to climb the lower slopes of Drohmo for panoramic views of Kanchenjunga and its adjoining peaks. Another possibility is to continue up the increasingly difficult terrain on the right flank of the glaciers for alternative views of the more remote peaks around the Jongsang La Pass.
  • Day 19:Retreat trek to Gunsa For the next 2 days we go back over our steps to Gunsa, passing through Ramtang and Khambachen on the way.
  • Day 21:Trek to Kyapra Today, rom Gunsa, we take the way out of the peaks that follows the eye-catching Gunsa and Tamur Khola (rivers). The track passes through unbelievable forests of rhododendron, conifer, birch and oak. The valley sides here are steep and the trail follows the river as it cascades downwards. We pass through Kyapra, the last of the Tibetan villages, and an hour or so further on, we reach a spot called Tang.
  • Day 22:Trek to Sakathum Moving ahead to arrive at the village of Sakathum, our way follows an heaving track for the first couple of hours until we reach Amjilasa. From here, there is a long steep descent from which we can see the Gunsa Khola Valley stretched out before you. You then arrive at Sakathum.
  • Day 23:Trek to Chirwa From Sakathum, we head to Chirwa. En route we see the union of two rivers, Simbua Khola and Gunsa Khola. At this point we get to see the most magnificent view of the two rivers uniting into Tamur Koshi. On following the trail along Tamur Khola, many other small tributary streams come our way. After trekking for about 4-5 hours we enter into the wonderful village of Chirwa.

  • Day 24:Trek to Phurumba The road additionally leads to cultivated land and loaded pastures from Chirma. On reaching Mitlung, we stop for a healthy lunch. Then the trail zigzags throughout the path of steep stones. After climbing for about 4 hours we come to the valley of Phurumba.
  • Day 25:Trek to Taplejung - Suketar As we go away from the valley, we keep on climbing along the ridge for about 3 hours to Taplejung village. We can roam around the village viewing the villagers getting along with their daily routine. As Nepalese folks are generally friendly, chances are we may get invited to a few village homes. From then on, easy climb for about 2 hours, we finally reach the airstrip at Suketar where we conclude the trip of the day.
  • Day 26:Flight to Kathmandu via Biratnagar We fly back to Biratnagar and then take a flight to Kathmandu. There will be transferred to the hotel upon arrival.
  • Day 27:Back to your destination country Here concludes our trip and our representatives will drop you to the airport for your onward flight to your country.

Usefull Info

Size of Trekking Group

For Kanchanjunga Trek, there will be one leader and Sherpa porter (1 porter for 2 trekkers). This arrangement is done for the smooth running of the campaign. It ensures that the trip will carry on as per plan even if somebody in a group gets sick. NTA can operate Everest Base Camp Trail for a group of any size. But, a group of 10 is considered optimum. However, if you have a group of more than 10, NTA can arrange this too.

Accommodations

While on trek, we will spend 22 nights at local tea houses. All accommodations for this trek will be on twin sharing basis. However, on request, single rooms can also be made available but it costs additional $ 300 US. But some places in this region do not allow single accommodations.

Meals

During our Trail of 22 days, we will enjoy typical Nepali food, different ethnic cuisines as well as all types of international cuisine like, Tibetan, Continental, Italian, and Indian. You can even enjoy hot chocolates, breads and drinks of different variety and snacks.

Breakfast of a day will be served at the same tea house or lodge where we spent the night, as per its menu. Lunch will be served on the way to destination and dinner will be served at the tea house where you spend the night. A welcome dinner, a farewell dinner and breakfasts will be served during our stay in Kathmandu.

Getting Visa for Nepal

You will get on arrival visa for Nepal. On arriving Nepal you will get tourist visa for 15 to five months. It depends upon your purpose of visit but regarding tour you will get the visa for 15 to three months. 
For trekking you need to submit photocopy of passport and your two pp size photo.
