Isolated mountainous hamlets, extreme wilderness, of sub-tropical woods, untouched and nomadic lifestyle of people are its major attractions. Rara National Park is known as the smallest national park in Nepal. It is located at an altitude of 2990m with the total area of 10.8 square kilometers in Mugu district of western Nepal. This trek can be done throughout the year but the main constraint remains road transportation.

Beautiful description of Rara Lake by GORP founder Bill Greer “a shimmering blue jewel set in a ring of snowy peaks”

During Rara Lake Trek, the splendid numbers of vegetation and wilderness include 500 varieties of blossoming flowers (like national flower Rhododendron, oak, black juniper, west Himalayan spruce, and Himalayan cypress, fir, birch), 214 species of birds (Himalayan snowcock, chukar partridge, kalij, etc.), 20 species of mammals (red panda, snow leopard, musk deer, etc.), and also other species like reptiles and amphibians. Rara Lake itself is known as the Queen of Lakes. It is the deepest and biggest freshwater lake in Nepal. The trekking route encloses all these specialties that are not found in any other regions of Nepal. The obliging local inhabitants are also the major attractions who are mainly Hinduism and Tibetan families.

After crossing the bridge, we march following the river downstream and pass from some water mills to Kabra. In Kabra, there is a huge overhanging rock which is the source of Shilajit (a mineral with healing properties). Now, our steep uphill climb starts and stops at Bhara village. We again start descending to Chauro Khola River to the village of Chautha. From here, we follow the stream uphill to Bhulbule (the Rara National Park Entrance Station at 3130m) and continue the climb to Ghurchi Lagna Pass (3450m) which is covered with Chortens (round stone Buddhist monuments) and prayer flags. Again downward trial starts gently at first before a precipitous walk through the spruce forest. This is the most exhausting day as the trial will take about 10 hours to complete. Finally, we reach Dhotu and stay overnight in tented camp.

Today comes the day when we will finally reach to the most beautiful place in our whole trek, Rara Lake. We have a short and pleasing trek crossing the steep north facing slope from Dhotu, forwarding to series of fields down to the small stream. We climb up to the Thakuri village of Jhyari after crossing the bridge. From Jhyari, we climb straight upward to a huge meadow atop a ridge through the beautiful Ceder forest, with the grand overhead view of Rara Lake. This region offers remoteness and a wilderness experience unlike any other regions of Nepal where birds, flowers, and wildlife flourish. Some animals inhabited in this area are bears, Serows, Ghorals, Musk Deer, Red Pandas, and both Rhesus and Langur monkeys. The lake is a habitat for otters and is an important resting place for migrating waterfowl. Stay overnight at tented camp.

From 12th to 14th century, Sinja was the capital of the Malla Dynasty that ruled western Nepal. The disintegration of old historic palaces can be seen across the river. There is also an interesting temple dedicated to goddess Bhagwati, known as the goddess of justice who rides atop a tiger. Stay overnight at tented camp.

Then the trek makes a steep climb to Jaljala chaur (a gigantic meadow full of horses) which is our destination for today. Trek to deepest and biggest Lake of Nepal

Nepal is a beautiful country. Almost all part of Nepal is beautiful. This time I went for Rara trek. I enjoyed the trip a lot. I viewed many beautiful wild animals and birds, tropical forests with blossoming flowers and herbs, mountains and many more. The way was a little slippery but overall it was fun. I also insisted on my guide to organizing a dive to Rara Lake. It was so difficult so it could not happen. But still, another adventure was very good. I enjoyed it a lot. Thank you for organizing such a beautiful trip for me. God bless you and see you soon!
