Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is located in mid-hills of Nepal and northern fringe of Kathmandu Valley which was established in 2002. This is the youngest National park in Nepal. It covers an area of 159km2 (61sqmi) in the districts of Kathmandu, Nuwakot, Sindhupalchock and some parts of Dhadhing. Shivapuri National Park is named after Shivapuri peak which means ‘sakanda Puran's Nepal Mahatmya’ as an auspicious place of Lord Shiva filled with Shivalingas. Vegetation in the park includes 129 species of mushrooms while animal includes 19 species of mammals including beer, leopard, deer, wild boar, wildcat and langur (one of the species of monkey). Likewise, the youngest national park of Nepal boasts 177 species of birds and 102 species of butterflies.
The national park is located in a transition zone between subtropical and medium temperature climate. The annual rainfall of about 1,400mm (55 in) falls mostly from May to September, with 80% during monsoon season. Temperatures vary from 2–17 °C (36–63 °F) during the winter season, rising up to 19–30 °C (66–86 °F) during the summer season. It is a favorite place for people of Kathmandu valley for short trekking and hiking. The Park offers the nearest retreat from Kathmandu as it is the popular area for trekking, hiking, and recreation. The former Watershed and Wildlife Reserve were declared national park only in 2002.
Day Hiking around Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park

We will drive to the national park entrance. The trail climbs past monastery through the forest to Bagdwar with shrines and hermitages. From there another 40 minutes climb takes us to the Shivapuri hill-top providing a panoramic view of Ganesh Himal, Jugal Himal, and Manaslu Range. Shivapuri hiking will take about 8 hrs where we will climb about 900 Meter the rim of Kathmandu.
Trekking in Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park
Shivapuri trek is the best short trek from Kathmandu that is as equally scenic and rewarding as any other treks in the Himalayan foothills. The trekking route climbs to the northern valley rim and then follows the ridge through the Tamang village into the subtropical forest of the park.

It’s very easy to reach there just 16kms from Kathmandu valley. It takes you around 30 minutes bus drive from Kathmandu valley. If you take a private cab then it will take you around 20 minutes to reach there.
The proper description of yourself is required for your passport Citizenship or Identity card. The entry pass is required without which you cannot enter inside Shivapuri National park. If you want to carry a camera along with you then you must have a pass for that, which you will get there.
Boots and stick are necessary to carry along with you. Seasonal clothes as well as don’t forget to carry jacket along with you because it is quite cold at night time. Besides, that carry some power chocolates, light foods, light drinks, 2 bottles of mineral water and some light snacks. Carry an umbrella or raincoat according to current weather of your traveling date.
Dhedo and masu (barley floor and meat) are famous in this area. You must try this Nepali food. Bhaat, Dal, and curry which you can get easier as well as almost all kind of food since Kathmandu valley is so near from Shivapuri National park.
